Yass Sewerage AugmentationLast modified: August 13, 2008 - 2:23 PM
Design works and tender documents have been completed in mid 2007 and tenders were called in August/September 2007. Contract was awarded in March 2008 and the work is now progressing. The Yass Sewerage Treatment Plant dates back to the construction of the conventional trickling filter system in 1935 with a capacity of 3,500 EP (equivalent population). In 1982, the system was augmented with the addition of twin 2000 EP Pasveer Channels. All discharges at this stage was to the Yass River. Increasing concerns regarding the discharge of nutrients into the Yass River resulted in an effluent reuse scheme developed adjacent to the treatment works. Currently this system involves irrigation of 40 hectares of agricultural land throughout the summer period. Between April and October most effluent continues to be discharged to the Yass River. Nutrient levels of the effluent, particularly phosphorus have been recognised as a concern to the health of the river system. The proposed new plant will address the issue of phosphorus discharge into the river and upgrading includes:
It is estimated that $8.4M is needed to augment the STP and the NSW Government has provided financial assistance to cover a portion of this cost. The augmented plant will produce high quality effluent that can be discharged into the river. However, Council has a plan to utilise a portion of the treated effluent to Council's playing fields in the future. In this regard, a draft option study for a reuse scheme has been completed and Council is presently being reviewed. Contact details | |||||||||||||||
