Road Classifications

Various classifications of Rural Roads exist within the Shire. Council is only responsible for the maintenance of Local Roads.
National Highways - Hume Highway, Federal Highway and Barton Highway are funded by the Federal Government with maintenance being undertaken by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.
State Roads - Burley Griffin Way and Lachlan Valley Way both are funded by Roads Traffic Authority and maintained by Yass Valley Council under a Single Invitation Contract (SIC) to the Roads & Traffic Authority.
Regional Roads - Wee Jasper Road, Sutton Road, Murrumbateman Road, Yass Valley Way and Burrinjuck Road are maintained by Council and are funded, or part funded, by a Block Grant agreement administered by the Roads Traffic Authority.
Local Roads - Are roads that are owned by the Council. Council may choose to maintain or not maintain any these roads under its control.
Crown Roads - Are owned by NSW State Government and administered by the Department of Lands.
