Yass Valley Heritage

Last modified: October 2, 2008 - 2:52 PM

The Yass Valley is rich in both European and Aboriginal cultural heritage. Certain restrictions apply in terms of identifying aboriginal cultural heritage sites, therefore most of the documentation available to the community relates specifically to European cultural heritage.

Recent projects include:

  • Yass Township Heritage Study
  • Rural Lands Heritage Study
  • Former Yass Gasworks Conservation Management Plan
  • Archaeological Test Excavations - Former Yass Gasworks
  • Crago's Mill Conservation Management Plan

Free Heritage Advisory Service

The Yass Valley Council offers a free heritage advisory service, jointly funded by the NSW Heritage Office. The Heritage Adviser is available for appointments once a month, to arrange an appointment contact Council on 6226 1477.

Local Heritage Grants

The local heritage grant program has been established by the Yass Valley Council with the aid of a grant from the Heritage Office. There is a total of $16,400 in the fund, made up of a government grant of $8,200 and $8,200 from the Council.

Aim of the Fund

The aim of the program is to encourage as much positive work on heritage items in the area as possible and engender greater interest and concern for conservation for all other heritage items within the Council’s area.

Invitations to Apply

Owners of heritage items in the Yass Valley Council area are invited to apply.  Heritage items include buildings, industrial sites, archaeological sites, movable items, cemeteries, heritage landscapes and other relics.

Applications for the 2008/2009 funding year are now open.

For more information on the Local Heritage Grants, please download and read the Council's Local Heritage Fund Guidelines, or call Councils Environmental Planning Officer on telephone 6226 1477.

The attached Heritage Funding Brochure also provides information on other sources of funding and useful contacts.

The Yass and District Historical Society

The Yass and District Historical Society is not affiliated in any way with Yass Valley Council. However, both organisations work closely in order to ensure that the heritage assets of the LGA are protected and enhanced.
