Road Safety Awareness Campaign Targeting Speed on the Barton ContinuesLast modified: March 19, 2009 - 10:52 AM
The Yass Valley Council, in conjunction with the RTA, and the NSW Police are reinitiating their road safety awareness and Police enforcement campaign on the Barton Highway after a very successful campaign in 2008. The campaign involves a coordinated inter agency approach to address the issue of road trauma on the Barton highway after a disturbing trend in accident statistics and loss of life. A total of 242 speeding offences were identified by police during the first operation with the highest recorded speed detected being 137 kph. Provisional drivers represented 15.28 % of the speeding offenders. The campaign utilised the proven techniques of combining strategically planned education and enforcement programs that allowed for ongoing planning, co-operation and communication between a diverse range of cross border stakeholders. A series of evaluations and comparisons was undertaken by independent consultants of the RTA. The project demonstrated outstanding achievements in all areas, validating the effectiveness of the strategies and resources produced. Upon completion of the project an analysis of the crash data for the Barton Highway revealed an overall crash reduction of 27 percent with no Fatal Crashes at all being recorded during the project period. The Yass Highway Patrol conducted five separate enforcement operation as part of the Barton Speed Project. These campaigns involving between one to three highway patrol vehicles. The RTA has again been instrumental in the development of the project with provision of funding for the production and airing of the radio commercials as well as substantial funding for enhanced enforcement by the Police, whilst Yass Valley Council has provided resources for project management, traffic data collection and the placement of signage at a number of locations en route. “All partners have demonstrated their commitment not only financially but also by sharing information, knowledge and resources for an effective approach to the reduction of road trauma” Mr Foran said.
