Library Chit Chat - 2 March 2009Last modified: March 2, 2009 - 9:26 AM
I have recently finished reading two delightful books by Marsha Mehran – ‘Pomegranate Soup’and ‘Rosewater and Soda Bread’. Even though Rosewater and Soda Bread is written as a sequel to Pomegranate Soup, it can be read as a stand alone. Personally, I like to read books in order and would recommend that you do read Pomegranate Soup first. Pomegranate Soup is the story of three Iranian sisters who decide to build a new life for themselves in Ireland. The three sisters, Marjan, Bahar and Layla, open a Persian café in the small Irish village of Ballinacroagh. We learn of the sisters' experiences in Iran through flashbacks throughout the book and learn what causes them to leave Iran. The story is intermingled with traditional recipes that make your mouth water. Rosewater and Soda Bread continues the story of the three sisters and reveals some interesting insights into their past and future. The characters are interesting and evoke a sense of empathy with the reader. Although written just as well as Pomegranate Soup I found myself not enjoying this book as much as I had hoped. Still worth the read! I must admit that I fell in love with the covers of these books that were beautifully illustrated by Natalie Winters. Natalie is a Kiwi and in 1996 graduated from Auckland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Graphic Design. Natalie is currently living in Sydney. In 2006, Natalie was the winner of the Young Designer of the Year awarded by the Australian Publishers Association. Some of the other books that Natalie has illustrated include: Affection by Ian Townsend, Unicorn Belle by Deborah Challinor, Rosa and the Veil of Gold by Kim Wilkins and of course, the two Marsha Mehran books. The Yass Library Book Club will be discussing Pomegranate Soup at their July get together. Both books are available from the Yass Library and can be reserved by visiting www.strl.nsw.gov.au.
