Safe Seniors on our Roads

A Senior Road Users Safety Workshop will be presented by the Yass Valley Council Road
Safety Officer, Mark Foran at the Yass Soldiers Club on Wednesday 29 October 2008,
commencing at 10.30 am and concluding at 12.30 pm.
The aim of the workshop is to provide information to seniors about staying safe on our roads and
retaining their licence longer. Safety issues to be addressed during the workshop include: safe
driving practices, information sessions on mobility scooters and a discussion on a wide range of
health issues, including prescription drugs and road safety.
Yass has an ageing population with the number of senior drivers increasing with each population
census. Many senior drivers face a number of age related factors that can affect both their ability
to drive and to be a safe and active pedestrian on our roads.
Mobility is a key lifestyle attribute, not only for running errands, going to appointments, visiting
family and friends, but to socialize and to enjoy ourselves. However, we need to be aware, as
seniors, that changes to our physical ability can make it more difficult to drive or even be a safe
pedestrian. Therefore it is important that we know as much as possible about any changes in
our abilities and how these changes relate to safety as a road user.
All seniors in the district are urged to attend this very informative seminar which is being hosted
by the Yass Valley Council as part of the Local Government Road Safety Program.
