31 Booked for Speeding on the Burley Griffin and Lachlan

Last modified: September 4, 2008 - 10:02 AM

Motorists are urged to change their ways after 31 people were booked for speeding as part of the Southroads project which commenced in August. Highway Patrol Officers issued 5 tickets for other traffic offences during the first phase of this project and 285 breath tests were also
conducted.

Police are concerned that some motorists are continuing to ignore the message to stop speeding despite a comprehensive media campaign alerting them of the increased police presence on these roads.  Yass Valley Council Road Safety Officer, Mark Foran said, "Motor vehicle crashes cost our community dearly at every level - financially and emotionally and there has in recent years been a disturbing trend in accident statistics and loss of life on these roads."

"An inter agency approach has been developed to address the issue of road trauma on the Burley Griffin and Lachlan Valley Ways which involves the Police and Harden, Boorowa, Temora and Yass Valley Councils", Mark said. "We will continue to reinforce the message that if you choose to speed or drink drive on these roads that your are going to get caught."

Phase Two of the Southroads project will commence on 15 September.
