$500,000 for Yass Valley’s Youth and Community Centre

Last modified: September 11, 2007 - 11:06 AM

Federal Member for Hume, Alby Schultz MP, today congratulated the Yass Valley Council on receiving a grant of $500,000 under the Howard Government’s National Crime Prevention Programme.“This project will allow for the development of Yass Valley’s Youth and Community Centre,” Alby said.“This facility will become a focal point to enable the implementation of over twenty Crime Prevention initiatives through coordinated interagency intervention using both social and situational approaches. “The aim of the project is to stimulate and strengthen partnerships in the community, increase local responsibility for change, strengthen community leadership, enhance law enforcement measures and address prevention in a proactive approach at the grass roots level.“The State Labor Government has failed to adequately fund crime prevention and law enforcement, even though they are State responsibilities, leaving our community at risk from anti-social behaviour. “That is why I have been working with the community and Yass Valley Council, to secure Federal Government funding for practical local projects such as the Yass Valley Intergrated Crime Prevention Program, so we can help to crack down on crime locally. “But I know there is more to be done.  I will continue to fight for more crime prevention funding and put pressure on the State Government to adequately resource their own law enforcement agencies,” Alby said.“It’s only by having a strong economy that we can afford to invest in the things we need.  By paying back Labor’s $96 billion debt, taxpayers are now saving $8.9 billion a year in debt interest payments - money that is being invested into better services like the National Crime Prevention Programme,” Alby concluded. For more information on the National Community Crime Prevention Programme visit www.crimeprevention.gov.au
