New Partnership to fight Cancer inYass
Yass Valley Council has announced a new partnership with The Cancer Council NSW, which aims to reduce the impact of cnacer on local residents. "Congratulations to Yass Valley Council for taking this proactive step to help make its community cancer smart," said Kelly Williams of the Cancer Council's southern regional Office. The Cancer Council community Partnerships program uses council outlets, networks and venues to get cancer prevention and support programs throught to people and organisations in local communities. "For a small amount of effort and time and almost no out of pocket expense, Councils can reap big health benefits for their community," said Ms Williams. Local Mayor, Nic Carmody said the Council welcomed the partnership and its potential to improve the health and wellbeing of Yass Valley residents. "I and the other Councillors believe that by working in this partnership we can lower the impact of cancer in the Yass Valley. One in three people will get cancer in their lifetime so it's important we're proactive about preventing cancer and helping cancer patients in our own community. The Community Partnerships program will include vital sun safety advice to childcare centres and workplaces, and skin cancer awareness programs for older citizens. the partnership will also mean local cancer support groups can use Council venues. "The partnerhsip is excellent value as most of the materials and programs are provided free by the Cancer Council," Nic Carmody said. "Our role is to ensure the greatest number of people in our community benefit from what's on offer." Around 40 residents from the Yass local government area are diagnosed with cancer each year and more than 16 die from the disease. Media Contact: Kelly Williams o413 886 584. Contact details |
