Drug Action Week is an initiative of the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) providing individuals, organisations, and communities with the opportunity to initiate and coordinate activities that promote awareness of alcohol and other drugs. The focus in 2009 for Drug Action Week is the theme message – ‘Alcohol is a drug– TOO!’ The aim is to increase awareness about the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and other drugs – with a focus on alcohol-related matters. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in Australia and its misuse continues to cause significant harm and enormous cost to the community. At Yass Library we are having a ‘Mocktail Party’ on Thursday 25th June from 5pm to 6pm. Mocktails are non-alcoholic drinks and everyone aged 13 and over are invited to the Library to try some. Win a USB Wristband (1 GB) Do you want to win a USB wristband? It’s easy – all you have to do is answer our ‘drug info @ your library’ quiz questions. The competition is designed to promote the free community website www.druginfo.sl.nsw.gov.au and the Library’s collection of drug and alcohol books and pamphlets.Running until the end of June, all correct entries will go in the draw to win a 1GB USB wristband (like a Memory Stick – but shaped like a wristband!). Entry forms are available at the Library and answers can be discovered on the website www.druginfo.sl.nsw.gov.au or using the collection of pamphlets available at the Library. The completed quiz should be handed back to Library staff. The drug info @ your library website is a free community resource offering 24/7 access to valuable information for the community with sections tailored for young people, parents and carers, and educators. The service is supported by a collection of drug and alcohol books and pamphlets available in the Yass and Murrumbateman Libraries. I have just finished reading Geraldine Brooks’ novel the People of the Book. What an interesting read this was. The book was inspired by the true story of an ancient manuscript known as the Sarajevo Haggadah.
April is gearing up to be a very busy month at the Yass Library with lots of things happening.
Continuing dry weather conditions have caused the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to extend the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) in Southern Tablelands Zone. This means fire permits are still required in Goulburn Mulwaree, Upper Lachlan and Yass Valley local government areas.
The Yass Valley Council, in conjunction with the RTA, and the NSW Police are reinitiating their road safety awareness and Police enforcement campaign on the Barton Highway after a very successful campaign in 2008.
I have recently finished reading two delightful books by Marsha Mehran – ‘Pomegranate Soup’and ‘Rosewater and Soda Bread’. Even though Rosewater and Soda Bread is written as a sequel to Pomegranate Soup, it can be read as a stand alone. Personally, I like to read books in order and would recommend that you do read Pomegranate Soup first.
BookMania
BookMania is Yass Library’s after school book group for students in years 3 to 6. We usually meet on the last Thursday of every month at 4pm. Bookings are not required – just turn up.
BookMania goes for one hour and we talk about books, borrow new books and do an activity.
Activities may include making book marks, creating displays or craft.
Membership to BookMania is free, but you need to have a library card.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 26 February at 4pm. New members are always welcome.
Another free two hour workshop for parents and supervising drivers is being presented by the Yass Valley Council Road Safety Officer, Mark Foran. Students who intend to apply for their learners permits this year are also encouraged to attend.
The potential for serious road trauma involving school children continues to be an issue of community concern in the Yass Valley.
Author to Visit Yass Library!
We are very excited to have children’s author Michael Panckridge to visit the Yass Library on Monday 19 January at 2pm. Michael Panckridge enjoys talking to children, parents and teachers about reading and writing — and especially boys about reading.
This is a free activity but bookings are appreciated and can be made by calling the Yass Library on 62261305.
