Are you thinking of standing for election to the Yass Valley Council?

With September Council elections not too far into the future now is the time to decide whether you have what it takes to be an effective Councillor for Yass Valley.  The role requires a large commitment of your time as there is an expectation that every councillor is familiar with the Yass Valley Local Government Area and the important issues that affect the community.

It is important for Yass Valley to have a strong field of candidates who reflect the diversity of age groups, gender, views and interests of our local area.

Yass Valley Council will be holding a Pre Election Information Session to assist those who may be considering standing as a candidate.  The session is FREE and will be held on Tuesday 27 May 2008 from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm in the Yass Soldiers Memorial Hall in Comur Street.

The Pre-Election Information Session will be facilitated by Gerry Holmes of Holmes & Reynolds Pty Ltd.  Gerry has been involved with the Local Government and Shires Association since 1993 in the development and presentation of legal workshops for Councillors and staff.

The information session will address the following topics:

  • What is local government?
  • Why do I want to become a Councillor
  • A Council's Charter
  • Council services and functions
  • The Elected Representative
  • o Representing the community
  • o Exercising a governance role
  • Undertaking a community leadership role - the challenge
  • The General Manager and staff relationships
  • Making decisions - Council meetings
  • Remuneration allowances for Councillors
  • Nomination - how do I stand for election to become a Councillor
  • Interested -further information.

If you are interested in attending the Information Session or you would like further information please contact Julie Buckley or Cathy Cooke on (02) 6226 1477.
