Census 2001

On Census Night 7 August 2001 there were 9708 people counted in Yass Shire. This represents an increase of 6.4% or 580 people since 1996 and and increase of 11% or 928 people since 1991.

People of Indigenous Origin There were 181 people or 1.9% (90 males and 91 females) in Yass Shire who identified as being of Indigenous origin in 2001. This represents a change of 35 people or 24% (14 males and 21 females), since 1996 and a change of 71 people or 65% (37 males and 34 females) since 1991. Age The median age of people in 2001 was 38 years. In 1996 it was 36 years, whilst in 1991 it was 33 years. Ancestry In 2001 the three most common ancestries identified with were Australian 4905 people (51%); English 3722 people (38%) and Irish 1307 people (14%). Of those born overseas, the three main countries of birth were:

Dwellings Of all occupied private dwellings in 2001, there were 3346 separate houses (92%); 120 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (3.3%), 93 flats, units or apartments (2.6%) and 62 other dwellings (1.7%). This compares to 3052 (92%), 88 (2.6%), (88 (2.6%) and 93 (2.5%) respectively in 1996 and 2730 (92%), 53 (1.8%), 84 (2.8%) and 101 (3.4%) in 1991. Of all occupied private dwellings in 2001, 2670 were either fully owned or being purchased, which represents 74% of all occupied private dwellings, while 707 were being rented (19%). This compares with 2414 either fully owned or being purchased (73%) and 687 being rented (21%) in 1996 and 2031 (68%) and 698 (23%) respectively in 1991.
